The 1978 FIFA World Cup, the 11th  International 
Football World Championship Tournament, was held 
in Argentina between 1 and 25 June.

















Argentina was chosen as the host nation by
FIFA in London, England on 6 July 1966.

(born 28 February 1944)
Regarded as one of Germany's greatest
ever goalkeepers, his nickname was
"Die Katze von Anzing"
("the cat from Anzing") for his fast reflexes.
The top two teams in each group would 
advance to the second round, where 
they would be split into 2 groups of four.
The format of the competition stayed 
the same as in 1974: 16 teams 
qualified, divided into 4 groups of four.

Mario Alberto Kempes 
(born 15 July 1954 in Bell Ville, Córdoba) 
– FIFA 1978 World 
Cup Golden Ball Award Winner – celebrating 
his goal at the 1978 FIFA World Cup final 
match against Netherlands. He was 
nicknamed El Toro and El Matador. 
With 6 goals, Mario Kempes was the top 
scorer of the tournament. 
In 1978 he was named 
South American Football Player of the Year.
